Sail & Sizzle This Winter on 2014 ‘Dancing with the Stars: At Sea’ Theme Cruises

The new season of the hit television show “Dancing with the Stars” is underway, and it’s fun to see some of our favorites who cruised with Holland America Line on “Dancing with the Stars: At Sea” theme cruises strut their stuff on the small screen. While we’re cheering for all of the professional dancers and their celebrity partners to do well, we’re especially thrilled to see some familiar faces like Emma Slater and Derek Hough take to the stage this season.

This past summer, several theme cruises took place on Alaska voyages with performances from the professional dancers and celebrities who dazzled the audience with routines from the television series. Additional events on the theme cruises included dance lessons with the ship’s professional dancers, a special fashion show featuring glamorous show costumes and a chance to meet the dance pros and celebrities, ask questions and take photos with them. From dancing pros Kym Johnson and Tristan MacManus to celebrities Sabrina Bryan and Carson Kressley, each cruise was a star-studded event.

Guest Dance Competitions on Every Cruise
While not every cruise is a theme cruise, all cruises offer the “Dancing with the Stars: At Sea” program, including complimentary dance lessons led by the ship’s resident professionals that were developed in collaboration with the television show’s dancers and choreographers. Guests from all skill levels of dance who choose to take their lessons to the next step can enter a guest dance-off competition to win a chance to compete on the 2014 Champions Cruise on the Dec. 6 Caribbean sailing of ms Westerdam. The winner of that cruise competition will win the coveted Mirror Ball and be named champion.

For guest Suzanne Smith, the shipboard dancing classes changed her life:

When my husband and I went on a Caribbean cruise aboard the Zuiderdam last Christmas as a retirement celebration trip, I was surprised and excited to find out about the on board “Dancing With the Stars” promotion and competition. My husband (a math professor) is not very interested in dancing, but I am a HUGE fan of the show, was a dancer in college, and participated in some regional musical theater before becoming a full time teacher 20 years ago. Since then, I have really only participated in this art form, which I enjoy so much either vicariously or at family or social functions.

It was so exciting to find myself the last night of the cruise, under the lights, onstage with the other dancers and my handsome, very sweet professional partner performing for the whole ship! And then I won the star trophy as cruise champion!! WOW MOMENT!

Suzanne Smith was crowned the winner on her cruise, top. Since then, she has started taking dance lessons with her husband.

Since then my husband and I have joined the local ballroom dance association, take weekly classes, and attend dances and ballroom functions all around the area. Our social lives have blossomed and we are having a blast!

Of course I would love to win a free cruise, but beyond that, I want you to know that this is a fabulous promotion and I hope you will continue it for a very long time. This has been an experience and memory of a lifetime for me and I want to thank you for letting us be a part of Dancing With the Stars: at Sea! — Suzanne Smith and Gerald Beer

Guests aren’t the only ones to get in on the “Dancing with the Stars: At Sea” fun!

Recently the production cast onboard Oosterdam organized a dance competition for the crew. They held one dance lesson per week, and after six weeks the final show was performed in the Vista Lounge for all to see. It was a great event with a lot of enthusiasm. The First Place winner was Nomer Motus, general service attendant. — Oosterdam Human Resources Manager Jaime de Castro-van der Loo

Donna, the Nov. 29 and Dec. 6 Westerdam voyages are the only theme cruises remaining this year, but ALL ships have a “Dancing with the Stars: At Sea” guest program that is free of charge.
