Learning Windows 8 at the Digital Workshops

Holland America Line has a wide array of enriching activities onboard, and among the most popular are the Digital Workshops powered by Windows. The popular complimentary workshops, led by Microsoft-trained “techsperts” on all 15 ships in the fleet, teach guests with varying levels of computer and camera experience how to take better vacation photos, make movies, edit pictures and create online scrapbooks.

Guests also learn how to share digital memories via email, keep a more secure PC at home, stay connected through instant messaging and webcams, find the best PC for their budget and lifestyle, and navigate new features of Windows 8. And if you can’t make it to the class, the techsperts blog about their lessons so anyone can learn more about their PC. Special thanks to Oosterdam’s techspert who posted this on Hal’s Digital Workshop blog.

At the recent Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) convention – the largest annual gathering of those who write about all aspects of the travel industry — the Digital Workshops powered by Windows has a prominent presence. As a professional development opportunity, SATW members could attend a Microsoft Digital Workshop, the same workshops that are held onboard.

SATW is a professional association whose members include writers, photographers, editors, broadcast/video/film producers, bloggers, website contributors and owners, creators of mobile apps and public relations representatives. This year’s SATW convention was attended by 110 travel journalists and 115 public relations representatives. The two Microsoft Digital Workshops offered to SATW members were co-branded with HAL and were led by “Techsperts” Scott Daehler and Kristin Viotto. Just like on board HAL’s ships, the sessions highlighted Windows 8 introduction and navigation, photo editing with Windows Photo Gallery, video editing and creation with Windows Movie Maker, introduction to the cloud with SkyDrive, online file management with SkyDrive, sharing photos and transferring photos.

If you’re not a writer and weren’t at the convention, don’t worry! There are still lessons to be learned. Special thanks to Noordam’s techspert Krista who posted this on Hal’s Digital Workshop blog.

Need a brush-up on how to access useful features in Windows 8 like the charms, your start screen, snap and search? The official Windows Video YouTube Channel has some great video tutorials that can help. I love that they’re short (most are 15-45 seconds long) and repetitive so you get a few chances to see how they do it.

Hope these are helpful as you continue to get to know your Windows 8 PC!

I enjoyed the classes on the Oosterdam in Alaska and came home with several worksheets, however, they were thrown out by accident. The class instructor said the work sheets are available on line. Could you send me the address or link to the classroom work sheets ? Thanks!
