Nieuw Amsterdam Sea Trials: Testing the Steering Gear

During sea trials for Nieuw Amsterdam, one of the more dangerous tests is of the steering gear and the ship’s maneuverability. With the ship traveling at a speed of 23 knots, the helm is put hard to starboard, followed by a turn hard to port.

The video was made in the portside Azipod room with Rini Honcoop (2nd engineer) and Barry Godschalk (2nd electrician) leaning to compensate for the list during the turn.

Video by Tim Lodder, Nieuw Amsterdam navigation officer.
