The captain has taken command of the ship today, after the conclusion of the handover ceremony. Here is Captain Edward van Zaane with his wife, Apollonia. Bert van Mackelenbergh is Statendam’s hotel manager. He currently is in Italy visiting Nieuw Amsterdam at the Fincantieri shipyard.

Woo-hoo! Holland America Line took ownership of the Nieuw Amsterdam today in a celebratory ceremony aboard the ship in Marghera, Italy, today. Gerald Bernhoft, Holland America’s director of marketing for the Mariner’s Society, submitted these photos from a Mariner’s reception held on Ryndam during an April 2010 cruise to Vancouver, B.C., Canada. During the reception, Mariners were awarded special medallions commemorating their total number of days sailed.
