When the Volendam visited Kobe, Japan, on May 2, Holland America Line made a generous contribution of $25,000 to the Japanese Red Cross to help with Japan’s recent earthquake/tsunami disaster. On April 30 the mayor of Nagasaki, Japan, Tomihisa Taue, came on board to welcome Volendam to the city with the touch of a beautifully hand-made kite, bottle of Japanese beer and a large bouquet of flowers for Captain Visser.
