A Milestone Celebration on Rotterdam

The crew of the ms Rotterdam joined in to celebrate milestone-maker, Hotel Manager Hans Dernison! Since Feb. 5, 2011, Hans Dernison has been with Holland America Line for 35 years, 25 years in the position of Hotel Manager. For this special occasion, the crew of the Rotterdam threw a surprise party for Hans. Although Hans was aware of a crew party going on, he did not know up to the last minute that this would be held in his honor.

Days of preparation took place secretly and his wife Tricia helped in covering tracks as much as she could, as he was a little suspicious with his staff liaising much too often with the Captain. The next day there was an officer’s dinner in the Canaletto restaurant. We presented a journal with info and pictures obtained from colleague’s fleet wide. All messages to congratulate him with this milestone.

In a recent interview with Hans, we learned that he was born and raised on a small island in the north of the Netherlands called Texel. He met his wife Tricia on the previous Statendam. She was back then the District Sales Manager for Holland America, and was based in Texas. Hans and Tricia married in 1983, and then went to live in Dallas, then in San Francisco and for the last 21 years in Tucson, Arizona. When asked why Hans chose this profession, he answers that his passion for the Industry literally came from being born into the hospitality sector — his father was the owner of a small Pension and Pub on Texel.

Hans mentions that he enjoys his profession as well as his long vacations and loves that he gets the opportunity to see the world and meet new people every day. When asked what makes a good manager, he answers, “to be open-minded to different personalities; to give everyone respect and to attempt to achieve the best out of each person.” The key is how to get along with your team. “I am as good as the people I work with.” Hans mentions: “You never know what life brings you, so make each day count and don’t postpone things by saying some day I am going to do this or that – try to do it right away.”
