Cruise Down Memory Lane: Saying Farewell to Prinsendam

This Sunday we prepare to bid farewell to our “Elegant Explorer,” Prinsendam, as she leaves the Holland America Line fleet after 17 years of exceptional service. As of July 1, 2019, the ship will officially join Phoenix Reisen, a Germany-based travel agency that also operates a fleet of cruise ships.

With 17 years of service comes 17 years worth of incredible stories, so before we say our goodbyes we asked our Facebook fans to share their favorite memories from cruising aboard Prinsendam. Take a stroll down memory lane with us by reading the shared stories below.

“The picture was taken at the summit (Mirador de Selkirk) in Robinson Crusoe Island during our 68-day voyage aboard the Prinsendam in 2018, Grand Voyage to South America, Amazon and Antarctica. We booked the voyage for the fantastic itinerary, but the ship’s wonderful crew and delicious meals served made our voyage extra special!” – Hue Rim

“Our favourite HAL ship. Oh how we will miss her!” – Sandra Iverson (Photo seen in main image.)

“Watched the Prinsendam, from the aft of the Koningsdam, as it maneuvered out of the bay in Barbados, Mar 6, 2017. Farewell pretty lady.” – Joanne Conklin (Photo at right.)

“We sailed twice on this lovely ship, most recently in December 2018. Was an honour to have done so! She is a beautiful ship and the staff was beyond awesome. We will certainly miss her!” – Maureen Wills

“We have two grands on her in 2011 and 2013. So much fun. Ferman was the hotel manager. He did so many extra things for passengers. He was one of a kind as is the Prinsendam.” – Patricia Howe

Rob Bannon

“This is a photo I took of the Prinsendam at anchor in Monte Carlo in 2016 as part of the Grand Mediterranean Cruise. The Prinsendam was my very first experience of working on ships as a Cast Member for Belinda King and the people I met I still consider them close friends. I got to see some of the most beautiful places in the world from Honningsvåg in Norway to Ushuaia to Argentina and so many in-between. I had hoped to have had the chance to work on board her one last time, but that only enhances the memories I have.” – Rob Bannon

“Sailed on this lovely ship four times and loved every minute of those memorable cruises. The Prinsendam could go places where larger ships couldn’t, up the River Shannon to Foynes, Ireland; down the Gironde to Bordeaux, France; and into the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro and right up to the city wall as seen in this picture.” – Barbara Walters (Photo at left.)

“My family and I were on the Prinsendam back in September 2018 for an amazing cruise around Ireland and Scotland. The crew was amazing at remembering names, faces, and favorite drinks. An amazing experience!” – Jenn Webb

“We sailed on the second sailing after she was inaugurated by Holland America from Copenhagen to Amsterdam for a 14 day Baltic cruise. Some of the memories include stellar white glove service, an amazing room steward named Suripto (call me Rip), the way the doors to our rooms were discrete and not all lined up in a galley, wonderful stops and so many excellent moments. We have been on at least 10 Holland America cruises since then, but the Prinsendam has alway been one of our fondest memories.” – Karen Wagers Michalski

“Thank you to Captain Day for giving me the opportunity to capture the most incredible photo I’ll ever take in my life. The Prinsendam will always be in my heart.” – Jennifer Ann Bracegirdle

“We sailed on the Prinsendam on our very first Mediterranean itinerary in 2004; we felt like we were on the set of “Cheers” where by the 3rd day, everyone knows your name! We met the most wonderful head waiter “John Wayne” – one evening I wasn’t feeling well (too much ship movement), but he knew I was really looking forward to the lamb entree. About half an hour after my husband went to dinner without me, there was a knock at the door. There stood this handsome young head waiter, carrying a tray with my full lamb dinner on it. Sadly, we’ve never encountered him on any of our many subsequent cruises, but he certainly remains in our memory, as does the beautiful Prinsendam.” – Geraldine Boyer (Photo at right.)

“We were on this beautiful ship for the 2016 Grand Med cruise and it was truly one of the best experiences of our lives. So grateful that we did this while my hubby and I were experiencing good health. We are still in touch with people we became friends with on this cruise. – Betty Docekal

Nous avons apprécié ce bateau que nous avons pris 2 fois. La qualité du service du personnel et le fait que nous étions seulement 800 passagers, nous étions une petite famille qui apprenait à se connaitre au fil des jours de la croisière. Merci pour tout!!!

I just returned from my ninth trip on the Prinsendam on her sailing around Scotland, Ireland, Guernsey Island and Amsterdam. With others I shed tears. I will miss my home away from home. Farewell dear Prinsendam. I thank you for giving me such wonderful trips through part of the world. I will miss you tremendously.
