A Waiter Becomes A Hero

Annemarie, crew purser aboard Noordam, sent us this amazing story about a life-saving event that took place on board.

Muhammad Wardi, dining room steward, learned the life-saving Heimlich maneuver nine years ago during his first contract on the Statendam. He never had to use it until now.

As he was working in the dining room, he noticed a woman in distress, gesturing and unable to breathe. He immediately jumped into action, dropping the dessert tray he was holding, and went to assist the guest.

He says there was no time to be scared. He determined that the guest was choking, and he immediately began performing the Heimlich maneuver. He successfully dislodged the obstruction and saved the guest.

On March 16, Captain Mateboer presented Wardi with the “Life Saver Award” during his introductions. When the captain told the heroic tale, Wardi was honored by the guests with a round of applause and a standing ovation.
