Happy Birthday Nieuw Amsterdam!

Time flies when you are having fun. It is hard to imagine that it is already one year ago that we proudly stood beside Princess Maxima of the Netherlands when she christened our beautiful ms Nieuw Amsterdam. To celebrate our newest ship’s birthday, we created an amazing dessert buffet with a spectacular birthday cake for lunch up in the lido for our guests. We also had a Champagne toast just before both shows.

As a “Thank You” to all crew for bringing the ship to life and working so very hard on her during her first year of service in which we even accomplished becoming “Ship of the Year”, we organized a wonderful birthday barbecue on the bow. As you can see in the pictures, the crew thoroughly enjoyed this special celebration for them, especially when we started giving away spectacular raffle prices. We are looking forward to many more happy years with and on our amazing ms Nieuw Amsterdam.

In addition to our festivities, the following text from an old 1-year-old Statendam birthday celebration in 1958 was used to announce the one year birthday of our ms Nieuw Amsterdam:

Happy 1st Birthday Nieuw Amsterdam! A sprightly young maid is about to celebrate the day of her birth and you are all invited. Exactly one year old this very day, she was born in Venice, Italy, the fourth generation of an old sea-going family, and promises to be a most worthy bearer of the great name she has inherited. In spite of her extreme youth, her beguiling ways have caused both young and old to succumb to her charms and court her favor. If you would show your affection for this lovely youngster, the ms Nieuw Amsterdam, please join us in raising our glasses to her at the Champagne toast tonight in the Showroom at Sea.

Stan Kuppens is Nieuw Amsterdam’s hotel manager.

I(n 1943 I travelled from Melbourne to Gorrock Scotland on the Nieuw Amsterdam. We stopped in Fremantle then a long stop for services to the ship in Durban. Then on to Capetown and Freetown now with 9000 troops on board. The crew, especially the kitchen staff were very busy, since meal shifts were continuous trhroughout the day and well into the night. I remember sleeping in a downstairs swimming pool and the bunks were nine deep, and they gave us double bed sheets, which made finding the right pair to fit between as one climbed up VERY difficult. But we were all contented, enjoyed the adventure. The shiop carried a 5inch gun that went off once, the rumour we heard was that it was a whale – Ho Hum!
On board there were 400 Polish WAAFS. recruited in South Africa after they had escaped through Europe and made their own way across Europe and down thru Africa where they joined the British war effort as WAAFs. Of course they were completely out of bounds for the thousands of male troops, tho I tetain a few words of Polish today.
If there is a photo of that ancient ship, I would love a photo
