Hans Becker, beverage manager on board ms Maasdam, sent in this post about Maasdam’s first call at Sept-Iles, Quebec, Canada. On May 19 the town of Sept-Iles, Quebec, received Maasdam for the first time. The town’s enthusiasm was evident with schools, businesses and churches closing their doors for a brief moment to welcome the ship…. read more of “Sept-Iles, Quebec…”
Note: Maasdam is currently at Montreal. If there is one phrase that characterizes Quebec, it is, “Et pourquoi pas?” The phrase, which translates to “And why not?” seems to be on the tip of every Quebecer’s tongue. It is a ready response of permissiveness and tolerance, a defender of an important concept — the joie… read more of “Marvelous…”
Note: Maasdam currently is in Quebec City. Quebec City offers beauty, fine dining and delightful diversions. And that’s just in the train station. My three-hour train journey from Montreal to Quebec ended in what has been called the most beautiful train station in North America.
Note: Maasdam currently is cruising Saguenay Fjord. It’s a 2.5-hour drive from Quebec City to the Saguenay region. My traveling companion and I pointed our car toward La Baie, where we checked in to L’ Auberge des 21. Note: Maasdam currently is at Sept-Iles When I visited Sept-Iles, the train service to visit the Innu community had not yet started. But I did get an overview from a helicopter, and the trip along the Moise River looked promising then.
Note: Maasdam currently is at Gaspesie The morning I boarded a boat to Bonaventure Island, Perce Rock was crowned by a wispy cloud. It was an indescribably beautiful sight, one of the world’s largest sheer rock formations and natural arches jutting out from the water in all of its sublime splendor.

In a combination of efforts by Crew Purser Geene, 1st Engineer Bart, Environmental Officer Robbie and myself, ms Maasdam recently donated 105 deck chairs to various churches and orphanages in Castries, St. Lucia. Teamwork and great strength were demonstrated by… read more of “Maasdam Donates…”
Note: Maasdam makes it first seasonal New England call today. I stepped into the cruise terminal at Halifax, Nova Scotia, and sneezed, causing no fewer than five Canadians to look up and reply, “Bless you.” My feet had been planted only a few minutes on Canadian soil, and yet it appeared what Becky, the Scottish… read more of “All Ashore for…”
