Imagine a trans-Atlantic voyage from Rotterdam to New York in 1890. A small 4,539 ton liner with 880 passengers in two classes — 80 first and 800 third class passengers. It must have felt cramped on board Holland America Line’s ss Spaarndam. The following collage shows the ss Spaarndam deck scene and gives a glimpse of how life was aboard this proud little liner.
