HAL Deck Scenes from 1890

Imagine a trans-Atlantic voyage from Rotterdam to New York in 1890. A small 4,539 ton liner with 880 passengers in two classes — 80 first and 800 third class passengers. It must have felt cramped on board Holland America Line’s ss Spaarndam. The following collage shows the ss Spaarndam deck scene and gives a glimpse of how life was aboard this proud little liner.

    Hi Ben!
I was happy to come across your post about the S.S. Spaarndam. I had an ancestor who traveled from Rotterdam to New York, arriving on May 23, 1890. Do you have any additional information about what the voyage might have been like? Where did you acquire the pictures in your post? I have been unable to locate more than basic information about this voyage. Thanks so much for your help!
