Explorer’s Scrapbook: Portofino, Italy

We spent an overnight in the small Italian village of Portofino. In the evening I decided to walk up the hill to the church, from where you have a gorgeous view over the village. I saw the yacht in the foreground and thought it would make for a beautiful image. I took several shots and afterward when I walked back down to the waterfront I saw somebody walking towards the yacht. I decided to go and speak to him and asked him if he was interested to have images of the yacht, which I had just taken. He right away said yes and explained to me that the yacht was brand new and had just sailed from the shipyard. I asked him to give me a memory stick and that I would put the images on it in the evening.

The next morning I brought him back the memory stick as well as my contact details. A few days later I checked my emails and to my surprise I received an email from the actual builder of the yacht. They were very interested in the images and wanted to buy some for their brochure. It so happened that this particular image has actually been used several times in yacht magazines, such as Boat International, Power and Motoryacht, Yachting and it was on the front cover of the Power and Motoryacht calendar and it made me able to upgrade my photo equipment!
