On January 8th, the ms Rotterdam arrived in Hilo, Hawaii, where some crew members went on the Secrets of Puna tour. Under the guidance of two very informative guides, the crew left the ship around 1:00 p.m. to a lava field to experience the hard dried lava and stopped briefly at a black sand beach at Kalapana. Crew members learned about a special fruit that would cure just about any ills and some exotic, legendary plants.
From there they moved on to see the stunning coast nearby at a rain forest, where they saw turtles swimming. Next, they visited a family owned macadamia nut farm where they indulged in many different nuts covered in chocolates and honey and enjoyed the exotic fruits and a tasty barbecue lunch prepared by the guides. Their last stop was for a swim at a lagoon that is gently heated by the volcano before returning back to the ship before dark.
