Updated Sept. 21: Hurricane Irma Update from Holland America Line

UPDATED Statement Sept. 21:

Holland America Line’s Caribbean cruise season begins in mid-October and we look forward to providing our guests the great cruise experience they are looking forward to, as well as the economic support that the region depends on, now more than ever.

No cruises are being cancelled as a result of the hurricane. Ports on Western Caribbean and Panama Canal sailings have had no impact. Most ports on Southern Caribbean sailings have had very minimal impact and will be ready to receive guests by the time our cruise season begins.

Our private island, Half Moon Cay, received only minimal damage which has been repaired and the island is now fully operational.

For 2017 Eastern Caribbean cruises, we are currently assessing our itineraries while closely monitoring the effects from Hurricane Maria this week. An update will be provided by Tuesday, September 26. If changes are necessary we will make every effort to provide alternative ports.

Guests facing an increase in cancellation fees between September 20 and 26 are encouraged to contact our Reservations Department for an extension in lieu of cancelling their Caribbean cruise to avoid fee increases while waiting for itinerary updates.

2018 itineraries are also currently being evaluated and an update will be provided on October 5.

Statement from Sept. 14:

All of us at Holland America Line are holding those close in our thoughts who have been impacted by the recent storms. As rebuilding efforts begin, we are assessing the best way to provide on-going support. Our parent company, Carnival Corporation, has already begun outreach and support for those islands impacted on behalf of the family of cruise lines. They have been in communication with officials in many of the Caribbean islands and have activated a plan to deliver supplies on both an immediate and sustained, longer-term basis. These deliveries will be worked into ships’ cruise itineraries as part of ongoing operations. We stand ready to provide support to affected ports and communities.

Holland America Line’s Caribbean cruise season begins in mid-October and we look forward to continuing to provide the great cruise experience our guests expect and the economic support that the region relies on, now more than ever. Only a few ports visited on Holland America Line itineraries this coming season were impacted by Hurricane Irma. Our private island, Half Moon Cay, was not damaged and is fully operational. No cruises will be cancelled and should any port substitutions need to be made in the future, booked guests and their travel agents will be notified.

We sincerely encourage booked guests and anyone considering a Caribbean cruise to move forward with their plans. There is no better show of support for the area and the people than to continue to visit.

What happens if our trip is to one or more of the devastated areas? Will the itinerary be changed?

  • Julie

Is Holland America offering passengers any compensation if they continue with their planned cruise. The islands and beaches are in deplorable conditions, if not destroyed entirely.
Even thou Holland America ships will provide top notch services, the islands will be another story. The beaches are full of debrie, the waters are not safe to swim in and the residents on the islands need to get their life’s in order before catering to tourist. These cruises will not be the same as what passenger were expecting when they booked and paid for them. What is Holland America offering passengers who are continuing with their vacations, if anything.

My husband & I are booked on the late October Blues Cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Good to read that Half Moon Cay was not damaged by Irma. What is the current status/ outlook for the other ports, Aruba & Curaçao? Also, do you have any updated information on Key West? We had planned a 4-day post cruise stay there.

  • David Maguire

I understand your position and applaud the sentiment of helping the affected Caribbean islands however we have booked a specific cruise because it spends the longest time at one of the islands where a recently deceased friend lived and worked and we wanted to share our sorrow and memories of him with friends on the island, if that island is removed from the itinery the whole point of our trip is negated. Where do we stand if we don’t want to do the revised itinerary ?

Will the port of Havanna be fully opened for the January & February cruises? And what happens to the port calls on the Amazon & Carnival Explorer cruises?

  • Ed Doherty

We are booked on the Nov 12th sailing of the Eurodam out of Ft Lauderdale and are very concerned about the ports we will be visiting. Key West was hit pretty hard as was Turks & Caicos, St Marten. We will not be booking any tours at these locations.

When can we expect HAL to make itinerary announcements?

    Holland America Line,

My partner and I live in Florida on the west coast of Florida and lived through a much smaller Irma and feel we were so lucky to have not been in a much worse situation as much of the eastern Caribbean. We were to board Carnival Vista on the 9th of September which we had to cancel due to the hurricane. After seeing all the devastation in the Caribbean our thought was to book another cruise on our favorite line unafraid of whether the itinerary would be changed due to Irma. We decided what better way to help these areas by visiting and patronizing them. Knowing that you might have to change our visit to part or all of the islands that we booked. Our decision was to go ahead and book knowing Holland American would provide the wonderful service we have always had and would just go with any itinerary change made. Dean and I look forward to joining you on November 11th and sailing once again with the crew of the ms Nieuw Amsterdam.

Will ships stop in St John Antigua?

  • Julie

David, please contact Reservations to discuss this. We are unable to make any cancellation decisions at the blog. HAL_reservations@hollandamerica.com/ 1–877–932–4259.

My husband, mother and I are booked for a cruise in early November. I applaud your sentiment about supporting these islands who rely upon tourism for their income. Have you considered offering an excursion that would allow an opportunity to work for the day to help ports of call that were hit hard? I know that this may not be a common feeling but I, for one, would gladly even pay for the opportunity to provide hands-on help to do whatever is needed to help make these ports of call recover!

  • Charles Arnold

Final payment due Friday, September 23. As of today, September 19, 2017 at 4:59 p.m. CDT still no notification for this booked guest. That leaves only tomorrow to be notified. Well are booked guests going to be notified or not? Only 1 day left to notify me.

  • Linda Adams

We are booked on a cruise stopping in Havana and Cienfuegos, Cuba. Are these ports being evaluated as itinerary stops? If so, when will a decision be made?

    Thank you.

  • Lucie B

I am due to pay for my cruise on sunday and my itinerary includes St Maarteen, San Juan and Turks and Caicos , I supposed that there will be a change of itinerary. What happens if I pay and I do not like the new itinerary and wish to cancel ? Will HAL propose a new itinerary this week as mentioned on our website ?

  • DONNA

IN THREE WEEKS WE LEAVE ON A CRUISE THAT HOLLAND AMERICA HAS NOT PLANNED FOR US. TOLD THIS WEEK….WELL IS FRIDAY THE DAY? WE WOULD BE HAPPY TO REBOOK ANOTHER TRIP BUT SINCE IT IS SO CLOSE WE WOULD LOSE 50%
OF THIS TRIP. I KNOW THIS IS A BLOW TO ALL CRUISE LINES AND IT TAKES TIME, BUT THESE NEXT
    THREE MONTHS SHOULD COME FIRST.

  • Julie

Our payment for Eastern Carribean cruise is due at end of this month. As of today St.John is essentially devastated, the Turks in bad shape, and PuertoRico entirely out of power.
Also our excursions to the islands already paid for.
What are our logistic and financial options?

waiting to here of itinerary changes for nov 8th 2017 sailing on koningsdam,11 day southern caribbean wayfarer.

  • Donna

Could you give me the revised itinerary for the Nov 4th sailing out of Tampa (15 night cruise)?

  • Tara

hey there ~ We are leaving out of Ft. Lauderdale 10/28 on Niew Amsterdam. Ports include Turks/Caico, Puerto Rico and USVI (St. Thomas). One thing standing out to me in the HAL responses is Half Moon Cay is fully operational which is great. HOWEVER, on a 7 day cruise I hope that we will not spend more than one day at Half Moon Cay. I am fine with rebooked ports, but not fine with it being only Half Moon Bay instead of three different ports. Are there any assurances regarding this? I’ve been to Half Moon Cay several times; it’s a nice island, but I don’t want that to be it…..

We are booked from dec 12/17 to jan14/18 on the konigdam to many of the severely damaged and destroyed areas of the Carabbean. In our case we have made our own air arrangements to FLL and our return home.
When you finally revise your itineries, I think we as paid up passengers should have the opportunity to be given the choice of whether we want to go or change for a different area. Also, remember we have air travel(paid) to be considered. So, time is of the essence.

    Hi Julie
When can we expect info on cruise leaving on October 28 from Ft Lauderdale bound for Eastern Carribean?
    Thanks
    Inge

  • Betty

My husband and I have a cruise planned for oct 29, stopping in San Juan.
I have read the port is closed. Since the whole island is without power is the cruise line still planning on going there?

  • Sharon Smith

We sail on Nov 4th Eastern Caribbean Puerto Rico is one of the ports and St Thomas another, with watching what is happening in Puerto Rico How can Holland say no changes to that cruise?

  • Julie

Our first scheduled call at San Juan is not until October 31. At this time is impossible for us to predict whether they will be ready to receive ship calls by then. We always prefer to retain our published ports of call whenever possible. The decision to make a call will be based on information from local authorities, port officials and tour operators to ensure we can deliver a safe and positive guest experience. Should San Juan not be ready to receive guests, we will make that change closer to the cruise departure dates, and booked guests and their agents would be notified.

Inge, is it this itinerary: October 28, 2017, ms Nieuw Amsterdam 7-Day Eastern Caribbean: Cancel Grand Turk, replace with Nassau?

  • Inge

Yes, it is. What has been decided about Puerto Rico?
    Thanks for replying

  • Andreas

We have already paid in full our cruise on the Westerdam departing December 29, but the news media and government agencies of the ports of call indicate that there will be no power for months. San Juan and the rest of the island seems to be in a really big mess.

We really do not want to go to ports where the beaches are destroyed, people have other priorities than catering to tourists, no power, no airconditioning, etc. Given the circumstances, HAL cannot guarantee the same experience in the islands. I agree we can support the islands, but as a customer, I feel that the value has been declined.

How can we change our cruise for a different destination or any other future cruise with no penalty?
