Mariner Moments: Celebrating our Longtime Cruisers

Holland America Line has extremely loyal guests called Mariners. They return time and again, year after year. They travel for weeklong vacations and 100-plus-day Grand World Voyages. They are our greatest ambassadors and true members of the Holland America Line family. But you don’t need to sail on a dozen cruises to become a Mariner — even guests who have sailed on one Holland America Line cruise instantly become a Mariner.

We enjoy celebrating special moments with all of our guests — both new and returning — and recently we’ve had some special milestones celebrated onboard by some of our valued Mariner Society members.

Statendam’s Hotel Director Bert van Mackelenbergh sent in the above heartwarming photo of Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, two Holland America Line Mariners, who celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on board. Captain Eric van der Wal and Bert joined them for a photo to congratulate the “newlyweds.”

Dolly Smith is a long-time, extremely loyal guest of Holland America Line. She started sailing on HAL in 1985 and by the end of 2014 she will have sailed on 23 Holland America Line Grand Voyages — including many Grand World Voyages.

Dolly is a self-proclaimed ambassador for Holland America Line, singing the praises of our crew and officers every chance she gets. She boarded ms Oosterdam August 25, 2013, with friends to celebrate her 90th birthday. Hotel Director Robert Versteeg, Guest Relations Manager Mila Castellon, Executive Chef Colin Harding-Jones, Dining Room Manager “Kiki” Basuli and several other officers hosted her for dinner to celebrate her milestone birthday. They pulled out all the stops the evening of August 26 from start to finish. Happy Birthday to “our” Dolly Smith!

Now let’s talk about taking Holland America Line loyalty to a whole new level. In October 2011 you met Adriana Buitendijk on the blog sporting an incredible jacket made from Holland America Line bags. Adriana is back, and this time she’s wearing a new jacket she made from Mariner Society handbags! Adriana and her husband Abraham Wijnveen just got off an ms Nieuw Amsterdam cruise where she received many compliments for her unique creation. Captain Bas van Druemel and Hotel Director Marco van Belleghem even admired her jacket.

Are there special benefits to being a member of the Mariner Society? The answer to that question is a resounding “yes!” Mariners earn Cruise Day credits every day they sail that entitles them to special gifts and invitations to exclusive events onboard. There are many other ways to earn credits, like enjoying a gourmet meal at one of the onboard specialty restaurants, indulging in a relaxing massage at the Greenhouse Spa & Salon or booking a shore excursion. The more credits a Mariner collects, the more rewards they earn.

There are five different levels of Mariners — from Star Mariner, for any guest who has sailed with Holland America Line one time, to 5-Star Mariner, which is any guest that has collected 500 or more Cruise Day credits. Each category comes with different perks including complimentary champagne brunches, day passes to the Greenhouse Spa & Salon, collectible gifts, and simple perks that make boarding and disembarking easier like priority check-in, priority tender and priority disembarkation.

The benefits of being a member of the Mariner Society don’t end once a guest steps off the ship. With a complimentary subscription to “Mariner Magazine,” it’s possible to keep up with what is going on with Holland America Line year-round. Click HERE to browse the most recent issue. There’s also advance notice of new itineraries and special offers on select sailings.

We look forward to welcoming our loyal Mariners back aboard, and extend a warm welcome to new members of the Mariner Society.

Holland America Line takes such good care of its Mariners. It is great to see these photos of some of them enjoying the well-deserved attention they receive on the ships Thanks so much for this post!

We are looking forward to our 21 day cruise on the Rotterdam, November 26 thru Dec 16th. Cruises have been one way that we can see the World, relax, unpack once and enjoy every minute of our vacation. One of our favorite activities aboard the Holland American Lines has been the ability to play “Bridge” and receive classes on the Computer, free of charge. What a wonderful way to meet new friends who we all have something in common and learn while we’re at it. We are celebrating our 50th Anniversary this year and have chosen to take a trip to the Caribbean as another event in our celebration year.

Thank you HAL for bringing us enormous pleasure along with seeing great ports of call and service that is impeccable and meeting life-time friends. We’ll see you in November 2013 at the Port of Everglades, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

We can’t boast upon being longtime cruisers yet (we are two-star Mariners though), but we hope to celebrate our 50-year wedding anniversary this year. To give this celebration an extra touch, we have booked the cruise on m.s. “Oosterdam”, from Sydney to Seattle (April 13 – May 10, 2014).
We really are looking forward to embark on this magnificient Holland America Line cruiseship,
experience the relaxing immersion in all amenities being offered on board. And last but not least, as a former Rotterdam pilot (and navigation officer in Holland America Line) I am looking forward to feel the ship under my feet again.
