Special thanks to Gerald Bernhoft, HAL’s Director of the Mariner Society, for submitting this post.
HAL’s “Elegant Explorer” the ms Prinsendam is on her second 2012 Grand Voyage. During this adventure through the Mediterranean and Black Sea, one week was elevated even further as I hosted Mariner Appreciation week. Starting off in famed Istanbul, our Mariners were treated to private cocktail parties, exclusive diners in the Pinnacle Grill and a Champagne Brunch in the main dining room. All topped off with a special pillow gift designed by world class Dutch porcelain company Royal Goedewaagen. Of the ship’s capacity of 834 guests, 584 were loyal Holland America Line Mariners. The top Mariner on board has sailed with Holland America Line 1741 days prior to the start of this 62-day European odyssey.
On every HAL cruise a special Mariner reception and loyalty ceremony takes place to recognize those guests that cross the sailing threshold of 100 days, 300 days, 500 days and 700 days. During this 2012 Grand Mediterranean and Black Sea Voyage there were sixteen guests that received their 700 day medallion, 15 receiving their 500 day medallion, 73 receiving their 300 day and 25 who received their 100 day medallions. There was an astonishing number of loyal guests that beamed for days after receiving their awards, and proudly wore them for days following the ceremony.
I presented “139 Years in the Making” that, for our Mariners, was like learning about their HAL family tree. Guests watched and listened intently to almost a century-and-a-half of history and stories of the company they have loved as part of their family. Tina Faulkner, personal cruise consultant on board the Prinsendam, has over 60 percent of these loyal guests booked on a future HAL sailing. As a HAL Mariner, it is good to know you have 15 homes to choose from that will take you to every corner of the world.
