Knowing that the ship was scheduled to call in Cadiz, Spain on September 25, I organized an educational tour for the Beverage Department. Cadiz is the gateway to Jerez De La Frontera, where Sherry and Brandy come from. Bodegas Domecq and Fundador, makers of Sherry Terry, Harvey’s Bristol Cream, Brandy Terry and Brandy Fundador, opened their doors for a private, informative and educational tour.
During the tour, various members of Rotterdam’s Beverage Department learned first-hand how to make Sherry and Brandy, the properties of soil and grapes including terroir, climate, vendimia (harvest), flavors and aromas. Most importantly, we learned about the history of these products which have been in the market for over 300 years and enjoyed by everyone including kings and queens.
This magnificent and eloquent lecture included a taste of Jerez Fino, Jerez Amontillado, Jerez Oloroso, Jerez Pedro Ximenez, Sherry Harvey’s Bristol Cream, Brandy Fundador, Brandy Terry Centenario, Brandy Terry Reserva 1900 and Brandy Fundador Imperial Gran Reserva.
Hans Becker is Rotterdam’s beverage manager.
