Jo Ann Taylor, manager for Holland America Line’s Mariner Society, sent in these photos and note from a recent cruise on Eurodam that coincided with Edinburgh’s famous Military Tattoo.
Edinburgh’s Tattoo has nothing to do with the tattoo’s you put on your skin, its a pageant of bands from the world over. This year’s Tattoo featured not only the various military bands of Scotland and England, but the Royal Corps of Musicians from Tonga, the Swiss Army Central Band, the Top Secret Drum Corps, She Huo Cultural Act from Xi’An, China. And to my delight they also had the vocalists and dancers celebrating the 250th anniversary of the poet, Robert Burns. I have to tell you that hearing Amazing Grace performed by over a thousand massed military bands and pipes and drums will bring tears to your eyes.
There is more than one military tattoo in the world every year, but the Edinburgh one is regarded as the biggest and best outdoor military tattoo in the world. There can be no more magical setting than the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, and we were blessed with a starry night.
