With the hoisting of the city’s flag, Lord Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb welcomed Holland America Line’s flagship ms Rotterdam and its crew to their new homeport in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on May 2. It’s been almost 40 years since Holland America Line based a cruise ship in Rotterdam year-round.
“Today marked a historical moment for both the city of Rotterdam and Holland America Line,” said Nico Bleichrodt, senior director of sales, north & central Europe. “Our ties to Rotterdam go back almost 140 years, which is when Holland America was founded. We were honored to have such a warm welcome from the esteemed lord mayor and business leaders in Rotterdam. It is my sincere hope that the city of Rotterdam and Dutch guests benefit from her patronage and the convenient departures to fantastic destinations.”
Before the ceremony, Lord Mayor Aboutaleb enjoyed a ship tour that included a visit to the bridge, conducted by Captain Sijbe de Boer. He also had lunch on board. At 5 p.m., Rotterdam departed on its 17-day Spanish Rhapsody voyage.
