Just when I thought I had seen all there was to see in Europe, just as I had started to become jaded to the beauty and wonder of this ancient place, something quite unexpected and altogether wonderful happened. I discovered a marvel of modern technology.
It was a normal morning in Civitavecchia and I was on my way to collect our new joining crew during our homeport day when it caught my eye. It was sitting there in the terminal just waiting for people to use it and stare in wonder and awe at its power. “Why,” I thought, “did it take so long for this marvelous invention to be created. And why hadn’t I thought of it!” As you might have guessed by now (though I don’t know how you would have), I had encountered a pizza vending machine known as “Let’s Pizza.”
This marvel of modern technology makes a freshly baked pizza in only two and a half minutes! Now, I know you are all thinking that it’s a frozen pizza. In fact the pizza begins as flour. The machine portions out the flour, mixes in water and makes dough. The dough is flattened then sauce, cheese and toppings are added. It bakes in an infrared oven and is gently placed in a cardboard pizza box for your enjoyment. All for only 4.50 euros, with prosciutto!
Naturally, my friends and I had to try it. It was a lot of fun to watch the machine work and in the end the pizza was actually quite good. Feeling jealous? Don’t worry! I’ve done a bit of research and apparently these wonders of the modern age are headed for the United States very soon!
