A cruise to the Caribbean is a classic experience that never gets old! Where the sun is plentiful, the sand is white and powdery, the ocean is as clear as a swimming pool and vibrant tropical fish are abound, it only makes sense to experience the region on a Holland America Line ship!
When cooler temperatures creep across the rest of the world from October through April, the Caribbean is the tropical oasis everyone desires. Luckily, we offer cruises ranging from four to 21 days exploring five different regions: Eastern, Western, Southern, Tropical and a partial transit of the Panama Canal.
Throughout the 2015-2016 season, our guests have been heading to Instagram to post their own eye-catching photos showcasing just how beautiful the Caribbean truly is. From Cozumel to Grand Turk, sit back and be swept away while daydreaming of this beautiful abyss!
Enjoy the Easy Life of the East
The eastern Caribbean is characterized by a quiet, relaxing and refined lifestyle. Some typical ports of call include San Juan, Puerto Rico, and some of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Cruisers enjoy its white powder beaches during the day, then shopping at local markets in the afternoons. The pace of living is slow and easy, so it’s the perfect destination for some quality rest and relaxation!
Cruiser and Instagram user @ericajacobsen caught this eye-catching photo while at Fort de France, Martinique. Those iconic tall, swaying palms you probably picture when you think about the Caribbean really are all over this island!
“I’d do anything to be back under this palm tree right now.” — @ericajacobsen
If you’re looking for something more historic while still maintaining that tropical Caribbean charm, we recommend San Juan, Puerto Rico. We love this photo by Instagram user @11ericarrots as he snapped the port’s natural beauty and distinct skyline.
Another popular hotspot in the eastern Caribbean is St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. Instagrammer @j2hounds got an amazing close-up of Nieuw Amsterdam when it called at the island. Nothing can beat the blue hues of the Virgin Islands.
Get Wild In Western Waters
Known for it’s exotic scenery, wildlife and endless opportunity for adventure, the western Caribbean is the perfect destination for cruisers looking to get active! Western calls typically include ports in Mexico, Grand Cayman and sometimes Central American countries like Costa Rica.
Instagrammer @traveipics snapped this photo of the colorful streets at Grand Cayman, and we spy Eurodam perfectly nestled in the background!
Cruisers sometimes get the chance to spot exotic wildlife like this toucan snapped by Instagrammer @dianalubbersphoto at Punta Arenas, Costa Rica. With its laid back culture and ideal climate, the Costa Rican’s coined the phrase “pura vida,” meaning “pure life,” to sum up what it feels like to immerse oneself in this tropical locale.
“Just remember these two words when you visit Costa Rica: Pura vida.” — @dianalubbersphoto
A call at Matazlan, Mexico, really gets your blood pumping! If you’re not already blown away by its breathtaking caves and cliffs, you certainly will be when you see the local cliff divers!
Instagrammer @cynthia_lutz4 snapped this diver in mid air as he plummeted into the ocean. The bright blue skies and ancient architecture shown in this picture are part of what makes Mexico such an intriguing destination. Only the western Caribbean can offer this oxymoronic combination of both excitement and relaxation!
Sit Back and Relax In the Southern Serenity
Typical ports of call in the southern Caribbean include the ABC islands and Grand Turk. Cruisers love to dive deep into this Dutch-tinted region to truly get away from it all!
We love this picture from Instagrammer @00nelll at Grand Turk! Crystal clear water, white sand and a friendly stingray who came up to say, “Hello!”. The Southern Caribbean is simply dreamlike.
Instagrammer @scottscruisepix spotted Zuiderdam at the port in Curaçao.
Imagine pulling up to this port on a clear, sunny day. We can almost smell the fresh, salty breeze in this picture!
Venture Into the Tempting Tropics
The Tropical region is our own special mix of eastern, western and southern islands with the addition of the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean … Half Moon Cay! Half Moon Cay is our award-winning private island located in the Bahamas. Do it like Instagrammer @maburns103 and enjoy a piña colada on the beach. Maybe splash in the azure waters or rent out your own private colorful cabana. We also offer a number of active excursions like horseback riding and kayaking!
Cruise Through the Fascinating Panama Canal
The Panama Canal Sunfarer itineraries are a truly unique experience involving a partial transit of this awe-inspiring system of locks through a tropical oasis. Spot exotic birds and beautiful tumbling waterfalls at the many Central & South American ports of call, then after you cruise through its marvelous locks, enjoy a scenic cruise through Gatun Lake before turning around and heading back into the Caribbean waters.
Instagrammer @justinabrams caught this amazing view from the bow as his Holland America Line ship went through Gatun.
One of the biggest perks to a partial transit of the Panama Canal is that these itineraries sail roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to please crowds of all ages with its gorgeous scenery and historic story.
