Postcard from Freeport

This entry was submitted by Maasdam 2nd Engineer Harm-Jan Bruil.

From left: Andrei Rusu, 4th engineer; Dennis Wanders, cadet; Wouter Levij, marof-A* and Harm-Jan Bruil, 2nd engineer — all showing that after a lot of work there is some time to enjoy the view.

Maasdam’s engine department recently had an interesting and busy drydock in Freeport, Bahamas. A lot of work was done. After the 12-to-4 shift we enjoyed the sunset while picking up the passengers who went on the island tour of St. Lucia. The tour starts in Castries and is picked up by the ship’s tenders on the other side of the island in Soufriere.

* We had never heard of Wouter Levij’s position of marof-A, so we wrote to the ship to ask about it. Second Engineer Tony informed us that it refers to a Dutch marine officer who has undergone dual cadetship training and has watch qualifications for the both the bridge and engine room. Impressive!

I met the greatest filipino bar staff member when i was sailing from seattle WA – San diego CA on sept 2008. We have stayed in contact and she will be joining the maasdam on the end of may, sailing the canada/new england cruises. She will be working on going for the next 11 months. If you run into her (gina) on the maasdam, then make her feel like she has friends.
Tell her that her florida friend says hi
