CARIBBEAN UPDATE: Impact on 2017 Caribbean Cruise Itineraries

As you may be aware, a few islands in the eastern Caribbean recently suffered damage due to hurricanes. Ports in the Bahamas and on western and southern Caribbean sailings had minimal or no impact, including our private island, Half Moon Cay. The majority of ports in the eastern Caribbean are open for business and currently welcoming cruise ship guests. There is no better show of support for the Caribbean and the people than to continue to visit.

Following is a list of cruises departing through the end of 2017. If a port change was necessary, it is indicated below. If noted as “No Changes,” the cruise is scheduled to call at the ports originally planned. Please note that 2018 itineraries are being evaluated and an update will be provided October 5.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Are there any Holland America Line ships in the Caribbean at the moment?
There are no Holland America Line ships in the Caribbean until mid-October.

Will cruises be cancelled?
We will not be cancelling any Caribbean cruises at this time.

Will my itinerary be changed?
For 2017 guests, if there is a change to the itinerary it is noted above. 2018 itineraries are being evaluated and an update will be provided on October 5.

Are you still going to San Juan, Puerto Rico?
Our first scheduled call at San Juan is not until October 31. At this time is impossible for us to predict whether they will be ready to receive ship calls by then.

We always prefer to retain our published ports of call whenever possible. The decision to make a call will be based on information from local authorities, port officials and tour operators to ensure we can deliver a safe and positive guest experience.

Should San Juan not be ready to receive guests, we will make that change closer to the cruise departure dates, and booked guests and their agents would be notified.

Will our insurance cover us if we cancel?
Each insurance policy is different, as a result guests should speak directly to their travel insurance provider.

What if I have booked EXC Tours in cancelled ports, will these be cancelled?
EXC Tours booked for a cancelled port of call will be automatically refunded back to the original form of payment. EXC Tours for our new ports of call will soon be available to book on our website.

Can I bring items to donate on board?
As it requires infrastructure to receive and distribute supplies and the needs at the islands vary, the organizations responding to the rebuilding efforts are requesting monetary donations. Donations will be accepted onboard.

Our thoughts are with all of those who have been affected. We are actively working to support recovery efforts as part of a larger initiative by our parent company, Carnival Corporation & plc. For guests interested in donating to the affected communities, monetary donations will be accepted onboard.

For more information about the affected Caribbean itineraries, please visit the Holland America Official Caribbean Update page. Please check this page prior to your cruise in case of any changes.

We look forward to welcoming you on board.

We are scheduled for 11 night cruise on Nov 8, on Koningsdam . I see St. Thomas is cancelled on Oct 18. Is it still possible St. Thomas could possibly be cancelled on our cruise ?

With the State Department’s warning to US travellers not to visit Cuba in mind, will the Veendam still call on Havana and Cienfuegos?

  • Julie

We are currently evaluating the recent announcement regarding Cuba and will provide additional comment in the near future. The safety and wellbeing of our guests is always our top priority.

  • Julie

    We are still reviewing itineraries.

Where can we find more information about the Koningsdam 11-Day Southern Caribbean Wayfarer and its new itinerary? What will be the new port order?

  • Julie

The new itinerary is on the Holland America Line website. The map is incorrect, but if you find the actual itinerary it’s correct.

First HAL changed our Christmas/New Years cruise on the Veendam from 14 days to 12 days and to a completely different itinerary with no notification that we can tell of. We could live with that.
But now, with American diplomats AS WELL AS American citizens being targeted with some kind sonic device attacks, I am so distressed that you could even begin to consider stopping at 2 of the Cuban ports. Even if we do not disembark in Cuba we could be targeted. So dangerous!
Please consider alternate ports so as not to endanger your passengers. For example how about the ABC islands? Please, as much as I would like to visit Cuba, now is not the time. Again, it is dangerous. Thank you for your consideration. PS: This will be our 18th cruise with HAL since 2008, so we are not “casual” cruisers.

Your website states you will revise 2018 itineraries by Oct 5. Today is Oct 10 and I see no information beyond 12/31/2017. What is the status of 2018 cruises?

  • Julie

There are no changes at this time on 2018 cruises. We will continue to monitor and should any adjustments be necessary, those decisions will be made closer to the sailing date.
