It’s Europe Week at HAL, and what better way to kick it off than with something new. For an avid traveler, and even a first-time cruiser, a maiden port call is an exciting adventure. What will be memorable about the new port of call? What stories will you share with friends and family about this new destination? Guests on Eurodam recently were treated to a maiden call at Haugesund, Norway. Hotel Director Stan Kuppens sent us some information about the call that was a first for Holland America Line!
The visit to Haugesund was not only the first for the ms Eurodam, however also the first in the history of Holland America Line. Since everybody in Haugesund was so very excited with our visit, we were blessed with very important guests from the city during the Plaque Ceremony. No less than two mayors came onboard and presented the Captain with the plaque and key of the city allowing him entry into Haugesund.
The city of Haugesund looks forward to many more calls of Holland America Line to their city in the future.
Haugesund & Haugalandet is the homeland of the Viking Kings and is also where you will find Norway’s birthplace. The town is situated on a strategically important sound through which ships could pass without traversing heavy seas. In the early years the coastal waters off Haugesund were a huge source of herring, and the town grew accordingly. Despite being barely a village back then, King Harald Fairhair lived at Avaldsnes, very close to the modern town of Haugesund. In the last decades, the town, like its neighbors, has been turning towards the petroleum industry, the herring being long gone. — Eurodam Hotel Director Stan Kuppens
