Cruise Diary: Setting Sail on Oosterdam’s Exotic Treasures Voyage

Journalist Ruth Taber currently is on board an 11-day cruise aboard Oosterdam and will be blogging throughout her voyages.

Fifty-five years ago the s.s. Statendam left Hoboken, N.J. on the first “Grand World Voyage” – and fifty-five years ago today, January 26, 1958, my “best friend” and I tied the knot in NYC. What better way to celebrate the day than our first Exotic Treasures (assorted islands) in the South Pacific aboard Oosterdam. January 26th is also Australia’s National Holiday – and on this lovely summer day the city, decked out in red banners, was full of people attending many events in Hyde Park and other venues. Sydney’s Summer Festival is also in full swing (opera, jazz, food events – name it and you‘ll find it here) a great prelude (or postlude) to the cruise.

The ship terminal staff displayed the typical friendly, helpful attitudes we’ve encountered in Down Under land; welcoming HAL staff on board got us settled in easily and quickly – and the bags arrived almost as fast as we did.

Captain van der Loo warned us of a possible weather system coming down from Queensland – but at dinner announced it didn’t look as bad as the weather gurus promised.

So we’ve finished our first dinner – great seared trout dish and we’re looking forward to tomorrow’s day at sea . I‘m sure we’ll find some bridge players – (tomorrow’s program lists morning and afternoon games). Big surprise – complimentary computer classes offered on board (supported by Microsoft); the “Digital Workshop” session tonight is “Introductory Photo Editing”.

I took the above photo of Sydney’s magnificent opera house with my Canon Point and Shoot camera from the starboard side of the ship as we sailed by on our way to the open sea.

More to follow!
