Lookbook: The Refurbished McKinley Chalet on Alaska Land+Sea Journeys

Holland America Line’s Land+Sea Journeys combine a three- to seven-night Holland America Line cruise with an overland adventure that includes a one,- two- or three-night stay at Denali National Park as a centerpiece of the Alaska experience.

To enhance the program, Holland America Line acquired the McKinley Chalet Resort, a magnificent 68-acre hotel property on the Nenana River. The line is now able to offer Land+Sea Journey guests their own elegant wilderness retreat that features seamless hospitality and sustainable Alaskan cuisine. The hotel serves as the ideal base camp for all adventures at Denali National Park such as flightseeing, ATV adventures, hiking trails, river rafting and more. All accommodations were recently updated with stylish decor, and newly appointed mini-suites nestled along the river make for the ultimate retreat.

love the way McKinley Chalet is looking now. was there in 2011 and loved it then, but this is so much brighter and bigger than before. keep up the good work. (But miss the Dahl Sheep that used to be on the rocks in the main area)

Stayed here this summer….my favorite hotel stop of our land and see adventure. The hotel was great, staff was friendly and food in the resturant was good. The view was beautiful and we stayed in a lower cabin it was so peaceful. I miss Alaska and the Yukon… It was an amazing trip.

Could you tell me which ship Capt. James Russel-Dunford is currently commanding? Thanks

  • Julie

Lyn, he was on Volendam but is on leave. He’ll be back Dec. 22.

Just came back from a stay in Sept. Rooms did not look updated. The beds were like sleeping on rocks. Restaurant ran out of food.
It was not a good experience!

Stayed three days in June ’14. Loved it. So beautiful and relaxing. Stayed in one of the cabins in the lower campus. Great privacy and peaceful. Only suggestion – put some black out blinds on the bedroom window to help get some sleep in the land of the midnight sun!! Hope to return again someday.

Visited in July 2014 and it is a beautiful resort. The only negative is that the mini-suites didn’t have a closet or any place to hang clothes! Not even a hook! Hope they have plans to remedy this.

We stayed here August 31 and September 1, 2014. We loved this place for the beauty, the accommodations, and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Even in the rain and snow it was a fantastic two days, wish we could have stayed longer, next time.

Wow, this resort is a wonderful addition to your line. We’ve been to Alaska twice with HAL and look forward to another fantastic experience soon, and we will definatly plan on staying at this beautiful new resort soon – can’t wait!

I had the pleasure of staying there for a couple of days in Sept., 2014. What a treat! Everyone was so nice and friendly. Accommodations were perfect, as was the weather. InDenali, we saw all kinds of wildlife memories and pictures to take back to Oklahoma. I enjoyed seeing a mama bear and her two cubs playfully running around, a beautiful grey wolf. moose, elk, and a cute little creature slowly peeking at us. But the mountains in the early morning with the fog hanging over the tops was breathtaking. The snow covered mountains tops were gorgeous. Thank you Holland for making such a trip most enjoyably memorable. Love Alaska!!!!!

We stayed there in August. We had a wonderful time at the Chalet. Our room was quiet and comfortable. The food in the restaurant was good and the service was friendly and welcoming. Seeing Denali bathed in sunlight was very special, since we were told it is often shrouded in clouds. We had a fantastic vacation and the Denali part was the highlight of the trip!

The environs sure look much more appealing and attractive than our stay at the Princess Lodge last year.

was there in August of 2014. Love it there. Would love to go back.

We were there the first week of September 2014. Perfect time to visit with the change of seasons. We stayed in the lower cabins and loved the peacefulness. Ready to travel there again in a second! Helpful staff and amazing views.

Enjoyed the resort with my family in 2011. Nice to see that it has been spruced up recently.

One suggestion for the shop at the resort. Please stock a good supply of common hearing aid batteries. Unprepared for the long days of Alaskan summer travel in 2011, I used more hearing aid batteries than usual and had exhausted my supply after arrival at Denali. No hotel, no shop in the area carried the common #12 size in the first week of August. Had to wait until we reached Anchorage to buy more.

Hulde aan de Koning, aan HAL and de Denali Resort!

My son and I stayed at the McKinley Chalet Resort for 2 nights when we were on the Sea and Land tour the latter part of July 2014. Wonderful experience! We stayed in a cabin room close to the lodge and restaurant. Very comfortable sitting area separate from the bedroom. While in Denali, we went on the Wilderness Tour and saw a Mother Grizzley and her 2 cubs walking along a dry river bed. Awesome! We also saw Caribou and Moose along the way. And…saw the entire “Mountain” in all its glory as the sun shone down on us that day! No clouds to be found anywhere! What an amazing experience that was! We also took the ATV adventure complete with a meal…such fun! We also saw a mother moose and her baby along the trail at the forest edge as we passed. I recommend both adventures to anyone at any age! It continues to invoke a broad smile on my face when I think of our trip and when I enthusiastically talk about it to others. I am so sorry the trip had to end…Amazing memories!

Our group of eight was there in July 2014 and we loved the beautiful McKinley Resort and scenery. My hope was to see a moose up close and we saw a mama and her baby right outside our room! The shuttle driver hustled us on her bus for safety precautions and we just had the best view of the moose. The ladies in our group found some terrific buys in the gift shop, we love to shop. McKinley Resort was the grand finale to our cruise on the Statendam. The cruise was awesome, scenery, food and entertainment. This trip was on all of our bucket lists and Holland delivered an unforgettable adventure for us all.

Very nice pictures, but unfortunately I look for access details as I use a wheelchair to get around. Are there any accessible rooms with roll in showers?
