It’s Christmas at Westmark Inn in Tok

July 25, 2011. Our tour arrived in Tok this evening to find large blow-up snowmen in the parking lot and general manager Dave Merrill wearing a Santa hat. He informed us that we arrived on Christmas Day at the hotel. Each summer the staff celebrates theme weeks and this was Christmas in July week. The hotel had been decorated, holiday music played in the public areas, reindeer towel animals greeted guests in rooms, the restaurant menu featured a Turkey dinner with the trimmings, and this evening, there was caroling and a small gift for the guests.

Dave and his staff and few of their children delivered hot chocolate, candy canes and a small gift to each room. A do-not-disturb sign meant hearing the theme song from The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and a loud “Bah Humbug” shouted outside the door. To be fair, Dave warned everyone upon arrival what was in store for Scrooges.

Other theme weeks throughout the season include Happy Unbirthday Week – with cupcakes and gifts for anyone not celebrating a birthday the day they arrive; Love Week for the romantics and Patriotic Week honoring veterans and active military and July 4th. If you are afraid of clowns, call ahead. Clown Week is coming up in August. It’s a nod to town founder Tohrine Osric Knorsson, a former clown and whose initials some believe led to the town’s name.
