Exploring Juneau’s Icefields and Taku Lodge in Alaska

Special thanks to Oosterdam’s Manager Onboard Marketing Astrid van de Ven for sharing this fun post with our blog.

On a beautiful day in Juneau, Alaska, we went on a Taku Glacier Lodge, Feast & Five Glacier Seaplane Discovery tour. Traveling in a floatplane seating eight passengers, all window seats, we enjoyed a 25-minute narrated flight with spectacular sights of five glaciers! After arriving at the Lodge we were reunited with Susan, travel guide on the Statendam, who we worked with during previous contracts. While the King Salmon was being cooked on the outside grill we looked around, took some amazing pictures and spotted two brown bears in the trees around the property.

While sipping our lemonade and ice tea, served on glacier ice (!) we were told that lunch was served. While many guests went inside to enjoy their Salmon feast we stayed out and watched the bears get closer and enjoy the salmon juices that were spilt during the cooking process. AMAZING!! After their tummies were filled, it was time to have a bite ourselves. Delicious salmon served with warm bread, warm apples, homemade coleslaw and ginger cookies as dessert. To enjoy the fresh Alaskan air on this sunny day we joined for a short nature walk. This concluded our tour at the lodge and it was time to return to our home away from home … the beautiful ms Oosterdam. Nothing more to say then, WE LOVE ALASKA! We hope you will have the chance to experience it one day.

My husband and I recruited a group of 32 several years ago to travel to Alaska, on land 7 days, on cruise 7 days….this was the most wonderful trip we have ever taken. We want to return to Alaska, but to see more of the inland. This Taku Glacier Lodge sounds perfect….and we would like to visit there. We want to also see more of the beautiful land of Alaska, as well as the fantastic cruise ships of Holland America (which we have sailed on numerous times). The only problem is we can no longer recruite groups as we are now in our early 70’s and I have developed Rigid Parkinsons Disease. I am not in a wheelchair yet, and hope to return to Alaska before I am confined to one.

Thank you for these lovely photos and for once again placing the desire in my heart to return to the wonderful land of Alaska. Thank you.
