‘Deadliest Catch’ Star Sails on Zaandam

In the culinary world of crab shelling, there’s no substitute for expertise as the crew and guests of Zaandam learned to their delight. Keith Colburn, celebrated captain of the Wizard crabbing vessel from the television show “Deadliest Catch,” recently visited the ship’s Culinary Arts Center to demonstrate his favorite techniques for shelling and preparing king crab.

Performing two demonstrations on proper preparation of king crab legs for such recipes as crab cakes and crab stuffed mushrooms, Colburn showed the skill honed by a lifetime at sea in Alaska’s rich but dangerous waters. In the ship’s lounge, he later answered questions from crew and guests about his experiences – his ship is in the top five in the fleet for king crab and snow crab in numerous seasons since 1997 – and the highly popular television show.
