Cruise Diary: Cruising Alaska, Day 3

Jessica Au recently sailed aboard Zuiderdam in Alaska and blogged about it.

In Juneau, we booked an excursion to the Mendenhall Glacier by Helicopter. The shuttle ride to the Juneau airport from the pier took about 15-20 minutes and after watching a 5-minute safety video, putting away our belongings and donning ice boots, we headed out to the choppers. Our pilot was very friendly and as it was my first time in a helicopter, I felt very excited and nervous, but also felt very safe.

Six of us were in the chopper and we had a wonderful 20-minute ride up the mountains and over the glacier. After landing, our tour guide Nick met us with a smile and we started our walk on the Mendenhall. I drank cool water straight out of the glacial river, looked down small crevasses arush with glacial water, and learned some great facts.

The view and incredible variations of blue seen there were amazing and an experience I’ll never forget! We took tons of pictures and had a great time! I highly recommend this excursion as young and old participated and all left with smiles on their faces! The shuttle dropped us off in downtown Juneau and we did a little sightseeing and shopping. The shops are fun to peruse and we got some great souvenirs and mementos from our time there!
