Anthony’s Alaska Adventure: Beaver Creek, Yukon Territory

Just a few miles from the border sits the westernmost community in Canada: Beaver Creek. At milepost 1202 on the AlCan Highway you’ll find the Westmark Beaver Creek. Beaver Creek is the perfect example of a rustic lodge–style hotel. The main building contains the guest services office and a restaurant. The other buildings on property include a guest recreation center, a lounge, a Yukon wildlife exhibit, a dinner theater and, of course, the guestroom buildings.

As I mentioned earlier, the town of Beaver Creek has little for our guests to do. So in addition to the lounge and recreation room/museum, the hotel offers a mini golf course and the Rendezvous Dinner Show. The show is performed every night of the season. The show, written especially for Holland America Line land tours, is performed in a purpose-built building. The round building features an opening in the roof to allow the smoke from the fire to loft out during the performance.

Being that the hotel is not open yet, we did not have the opportunity to see the show, but I am told it is a guest favorite. So if you happen to be in Beaver Creek, make sure you see the show!

We held our training in the Rendezvous Dinner Theater. The group had just arrived in from Whitehorse the night before on a Holland America Tour motorcoach. Like at the Klondike Inn, Beaver Creek’s staff is composed of a group of people from all over Canada, many still in college.

One of the hardest parts of running a seasonal operation is retaining staff from year to year. Beaver Creek welcomed back many repeaters this season and most notably one staff member was returning for his 30th season!

After training, it was off to Tok (about two hours away) for dinner at Fast Eddy’s and to spend the night at Westmark Tok. We’ll be headed for Fairbanks in the morning where we’ll visit the “flagship” Westmark hotel.

Stay Tuned.
