New Holland America Line Uniforms Win Image Award
It’s time for Holland America Line’s shipboard uniforms to hit the runway! New uniforms that were co-designed by Cintas received the Image of the Year (IOY) Award in the cruise line category at a ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada, earlier this month.
Presented by the Image Apparel Institute, a division of the North American Association of Uniform Manufacturers & Distributors (NAUMD), the IOY Awards recognize fashion, function, creativity and innovation. The awards are given each year at NAUMD’s annual conference and expo.
The uniforms recognized by NAUMD were designed for dining room stewards, dining room runners, wine attendants, stateroom attendants and housekeeping attendants. They were rolled out earlier this year.
“The crisp new designs are a reflection of the gracious, elegant style of Holland America Line. The new pieces are both practical and professional and enable our crew members to comfortably deliver world-class service while maintaining a fashionable appearance.” — Hart Sugarman, Holland America Line’s deputy director, housekeeping operations
Working closely with Cintas designers, Sugarman’s goal was to make the uniforms more fashionable than the traditional cruise uniform. Cintas made a shipboard visit to discuss the wants and needs of department heads and crew members so they could design uniforms that brought together all the necessary elements.
Holland America Line has earned IOY Awards on two previous occasions: in 2009 for the Tamarind restaurant uniforms and in 2011 for the Master Chef Room uniforms. Both times, HAL partnered with Omega Uniform Systems on those designs.
Every Holland America ship sails with a full complement of professional tailors and a fully equipped tailor shop. Everything the tailors need — a full set of patterns, fabrics, buttons, zippers, sewing machines, hemmers, buttonholers — is right on board to make sure that the staff are kept looking their best in their smart uniforms.

Love the new looks. Can you please explain the differences with the dining room uniforms? There seem to be three different types. Who wears what? Is there still a change between formal and smart casual nights for the dining stewards?
Excellent news! Fresh, professional and elegant uniforms. Liked the old, love the new.
Hiii… HAL Good uniforms….we wish good spirit also for service our guest of Holland Americ Line
Brad: The fancy lapels would be the main dining room waiters, behind them with the collarless jacket would be the assistant waiters followed by the dining room runners in the dark blue.
Dining room and wine attendants like quite nice. The housekeeping attendants however look like dental assistants. I’d take another look and try a little harder on them.
They are looking very nice with a new uniforms. I hope we’ll wearing that uniforms at soon as posible. We wait for the new ship of holland america line.
The ones with the ties are the Main DR Stewards, The white, no tie – are the Assistant Dining Room Stewards and the Black Uniforms are Dining Room Runners.
Love the crisp clean look! And thank you Jonathan for the clarification
look fresh with new uniforms, well done.
Oh my, although I do like the new dining room uniforms I do feel sorry for the laundry people. White is so unforgiving!
