iPad iBlog: Dog Sledding in Alaska

We had the most fantastic excursion today in Juneau. The Dog Sledding on the Mendenhall Glacier by Helicopter excursion is one for your bucket list and it includes a helicopter ride over Mendenhall Glacier and an hour long stop at a dog camp for some mushing. Our adventure began with a safety briefing, a life vest and special glacier boots which fit over our shoes. We took a 15-minute scenic tour of beautiful blue and white rivers of ice, jagged mountains and lush green valleys.

When we arrived at the camp, Kim gave us a briefing of the dog camp and turned us over to her husband, Dustin who introduced us to the dog team. Kim and Dustin live at the camp from May to September with the dogs. Dustin took us mushing and explained that the dogs are breed to live in these cold conditions and love to run. There were four of us on the sled plus Dustin. The dogs whisked us around the glacier for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Afterwards we met the puppies and took this photo with Bieber…named after Justin.

Dustin shows us his home at the camp.

My husband, daughter and myself did the dog sled in 2008 when we docked at Skagway and loved every moment of it as well as the rest of the cruise on the Statendam.
We are hoping to do another trip in th next year or two and traveling up to Denali and surounding areas, HAL certainly are the best.
