Fancy Footwork at B&W Ball Boot Camp

Fancy Footwork at B&W Ball Boot Camp

As you know, Holland America Line has many long-standing traditions. No tradition strikes fear in the heart of a ship’s officers as much as the Black and White Ball. The Black and White Ball is always a featured on our longer voyages (usually 14 days or more). Basically, the ball is a chance for all of our lovely lady passengers to steal a dance or two with the captain and his officers. It’s called the “Black and White Ball” in reference to our uniforms, black pants with white formal jackets.

Being that Rotterdam is on 14-day voyages, we have a Black and White Ball every cruise. It’s “all hands on deck” as we know there are lots of ladies to fill up those dance cards.

After our first ball a few cruises ago it was apparent that there might be a need for some basic dance instruction so that our guests would be assured the finest in officer interaction experiences. So I set up the first-ever “Black and White Ball Boot Camp.” Some of our cast members volunteered to show our officers a few easy steps so they would be able to cut a rug with confidence.

The event was held in the passenger gym after closing time. Several of our hardworking team were eager to learn. Our lead singer, Selena Robison, started them off slowly and eventually took them through quicker songs like “Dancing Queen” and even showed them a basic waltz. Besides the inherent educational benefit, a good time was had by all.

To all you ladies out there planning to sail with us on Rotterdam … Fear not! Our officers are now well equipped to spin you around the floor with minimal chance of your toes being stepped on.

See you out there!
