Eurodam’s Visit to Prince Christian Sund, Greenland

On September 3, the Eurodam made the transit through the Prince Christian Sund in Greenland. The day started bright and early and many guests were out on deck as of 6 a.m. to see our approach to the entrance to the Sund. The weather was magnificent, clear blue skies with incredible vistas. We entered the Sund around 7 a.m. and stayed inside until 5 p.m. In the late morning the fast rescue boat was lowered to pick up a piece of real glacier ice, which was displayed on the Lido deck mid ship for the guests to admire. Afterwards we sailed on and around 2:30 p.m. we were near the small village of Augpilagtoq. The fast rescue boat was lowered once again for a visit to the local village. We took freshly made pizza, pasta, t-shirts, bags, posters and books from the ship to give to the local villagers. After our visit to the local village we sailed on and passed some of the most dramatic scenery in the entire Sund with rock faces up to 1,400 metres in height. The scenery was spectacular throughout the day and the guests certainly had one of the best days ever in Prince Christian Sund. Enjoy the images.

On Eurodam’s maiden transatlantic sailing Capt. van Donselaar took her thru the Sund for the first time. We had not expected it and were stunned , especially by the silence. Unfortunately we saw very little because we had dense fog most of the time, which meant that great caution was needed. I remember a heartstopping moment when the fog momentarily opened a “window” around the ship and we found a very small fishing boat directly in front of the bow ! Needless to say: there was no leisurly scenic cruising that day, but still: all of us enjoyed the Sund immensely. Thank you for posting your pictures: now we have a clear picture of the beauty hidden in all that fog!!
