Cruise Diary: Messina, Italy

Journalist Lou Freed and her husband Jim (who took the photos) sailed the Mediterranean on Noordam’s Roman Empire Cruise. This is their last port, so enjoy!

In Messina, Noordam moored right at the city center, within easy walking distance of the main shopping areas and the Cathedral Square with the renowned Clock Tower.

Tourists in Messina view the renowned noon time Clock Tower spectacle at the Cathedral Square. The show includes a rooster crowing, a lion roaring, knights, angels and the Holy Family.

If you want a tour of the town, try one of the many horse-drawn carts that are available in the Cathedral Square. They are a relaxing way to tour the city.

After a walk around the town, enjoy one of the many wonderful Sicilian pastries with a cup of coffee or tea. It’s the perfect ending to a day ashore.

After leaving Messina, Noordam passengers were treated to a magnificent sail by the volcanic island of Stromboli. Complete with steam and smoke, the active volcano actually is home to a few fatalistic souls.
