This is a large city. We were here once, many years ago on this ship (2006 world cruise), but at that time we, along with another couple, got a taxi/tour guide and drove out about an hour east to a small village along the coast, had lunch and walked around a bit and came back.

The weather was not very nice this day. We had lots of clouds, it was cool and damp and eventually it rained. We finally decided to get off the ship about 11:30 am and do the Hop-on, Hop-off bus tour, which came down to the port. It rained a little off and on while we were on the bus. We had a really nice tour around the city going by all the highlights and the bus went all the way out to Knossos Palace — unquestionably one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece — but by then there was not enough time to get off and catch a later bus. Plus the weather was not conducive to sight-seeing.

According to Mythology, the legendary half-bull, half-man minotaur lurked in the labyrinth beneath Knossos. The misshapen creature was the issue of Queen Pasiphae’s unnatural love for a white bull (sent as a sacrificial offering by Poseidon, God of the Sea). Theseus, prince of Athens, was dispatched to slay the beast. Daedelus, the architect who had designed the labyrinth, showed him a plan of the maze and supplied him with a huge ball of string, which he rolled out as he made his way. The string path enabled him to find his way out. Theseus slayed the Minotaur and eloped with Minos’ daughter, Ariadne.

As we got off the bus, back in the port after about 2 hours of driving, the heavens opened up and it poured rain. Well, we got out our trusty umbrellas (always have them in my backpack) and got back to the ship without getting too wet. Of course, as things go, about an hour later it was bright and sunny. Oh well, we had seen enough!!!
