Axe Throwing Goes ‘On Location’ on Alaska Cruises

Axe Throwing Goes ‘On Location’ on Alaska Cruises

The “On Location” enrichment program just got a little more daring! Holland America Line just introduced a new axe throwing demonstration on Alaska cruises.

Local world-champion axe throwers will demonstrate their skill and hold a Q&A session onboard so guests can learn more about the lumberjack lifestyle. Do you think you’ve got what it takes to be an Alaskan lumberjack? Guests will even have an opportunity to roll up their flannel sleeves and test their skills at an authentic axe throwing competition. But remember to tell the kids: don’t try this at home!

The “On Location” axe throwing is a joint effort between “The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show” in Ketchikan, Alaska, and Holland America Line. Guests who enjoy the “On Location” axe throwing demonstration can continue the adventure ashore at Ketchikan on the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show shore excursion.

The "Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show at Ketchikan" features the best of the best.

On shore the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show goes beyond axe throwing to include more than a dozen events. The world’s best lumberjacks compete head to head in chopping, sawing, relay races, log rolling and a 50-foot speed climb. It is a fabulous family-friendly event that celebrates the history of the rugged region that was shaped, in large part, by the timber industry.

Holland America Line guest Jichni recently participated in the event onboard and on shore and thoroughly enjoyed the experience:

“We had a preview of the show on the ship so when it came time to see the show we were pretty excited … very entertaining and we had a great time. Great show for all ages and the audience gets to participate, which makes it all the more fun. You are protected from the weather, so rain or shine you will enjoy the show. Definitely recommend. A must see.”

Statendam recently held an axe throwing competition onboard, and it looked like an exciting event.

Other “On Location” events in Alaska include the Road House Review and Northern Lights Show. Adventure traveler and Dutch TV personality Charlotte Van Hoorn was on ms Zaandam in Alaska in July 2013 and had a fabulous “On Location” experience. She shared it with us in a blog post titled “On Location, Still on My Mind.”

“[I had time] to enjoy the ship…you still knew you were in Alaska, what with the Mondrian Lounge’s Northern Lights Show. I especially enjoyed the Road House Review as well because I knew all the music and the crowd sang along while the performers danced an awful lot of steps in a short period of time to the numbers — really zippy and fast paced. On Location is still on my mind.”

Holland America Line’s “On Location” program is a fantastic way to celebrate the spirit and culture of the region where you’re cruising. From steel drum lessons in the Caribbean to tai chi on deck with a master in Asia, each cruise features a Location Team from the region that either visits the ship or sails on board and shares unique, personal insights with guests through lectures, demonstrations and performances. They provide information about local customs, the way of life, off-the-beaten-path port highlights and secrets that only a local would know.

My wife and I will be on the Oosterdam next June, and if it is offered on that cruise, I am more than willing to give it a try.
