Bob Betz is founder/winemaker of Betz Family Winery, the latest chapter in 40 years in the wine industry. His passion for wine and winemaking was initially fueled by a year in the vineyards and cellars of Western Europe in the early 1970s. His focus on the basics of grape growing and winemaking laid a foundation for the next four decades in the wine industry.
After returning to Seattle in the mid 1970s Bob joined Chateau Ste. Michelle. During nearly three decades there Bob was part of the emergence of Washington winemaking, working with growers and winemakers to make this new viticultural area become a reality. While there, Bob also worked with the company’s California wineries and was managing director of two international joint ventures, Col Solare with Italy’s Marchese Antinori, and Eroica with Germany’s Ernst Loosen.
In 1997 Bob and his wife Cathy started Betz Family Winery, focused on red wines from the Columbia Valley. Tapping into his 38 vintages in Washington and his international perspective of vineyards and winemaking, Bob brings his unique signature to a collection of small lot wines. In addition, Bob is a frequent lecturer on winemaking and international wine styles, and a judge in international wine competitions.
Bob holds a Master of Wine (MW) degree from the Institute of Masters of Wine in London. He is one of 300 people world-wide to have passed this most rigorous exam in the wine industry.
