High Above the Turnagain
Take the tram to a high shoulder of Mt. Alyeska ridge line, head over to the Seven Glaciers restaurant and check out the view. Dropping away at your feet are chutes that in winter become ski runs with names like Gearjammer and Chili Dog. The town of Alyeska tucks into the base of the mountains and off in the distance glints the Turnagain arm of the Cook Inlet. Alyeska, Alaska's premier year-round resort, features the chateau-style Alyeska Prince Hotel, the only Alaska property to earn a place on Conde Nast's Gold List. The town is also a great place for hiking, horseback riding, or taking a trip on the Alaska Railroad.

Gate of the Arctic
If you hit Coldfoot on the road from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, you'd be 60 miles inside the Arctic Circle with 240 miles to go before you hit the Arctic Ocean. The tiny town is a speck of humanity in the vastness of the Endicott and Phillip Smith mountain ranges. Explore the breathtaking landscape by hiking, rafting or fishing. Nearby, discover Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, 8.3 million acres of Alaskan wilderness, or explore the Arctic Refuge, where moose, caribou and other wildlife roam free.

Visit the Icy League
There is a spot in College Fjord where you can see eight glaciers at once. The fjord pokes into the Chugach Mountains at the north end of Prince William Sound and it's the only place in Alaska that surrounds you on three sides with glaciers, five of which terminate at the water. The Harriman Expedition that explored College Fjord in 1899 was funded by Ivy League colleges, and all of the glaciers were named for the various schools in their honor. As you travel into the Fjord, the glaciers on the left are named for women's colleges and those on the right are named for men's colleges. Harvard Glacier is the biggest – its face is a mile and a half across.

Scenery and Salmon Fishing
Fish for salmon; fish for views. You'll leave sated. Nestled in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula at the northern tip of Kenai Lake, Cooper Landing is the outpost for some of the best fishing in the world. Nearby, you can explore Lower Russian Lake and the falls on Russian River, frenetic during salmon runs.

Get to know Alaska as few ever do. Denali National Park and Preserve is a park of international significance. It features North America's highest mountain, 20,320-foot tall Mount McKinley. The Alaska Range also includes countless other spectacular mountains and many large glaciers. The park was established as Mount McKinley National Park on Feb. 26, 1917. The original park was designated a wilderness area and incorporated into Denali National Park and Preserve in 1980. It the largest continually protected natural ecosystem in the world. Watch for moose, sheep, caribou and bear and marvel at massive icefields. Land on a glacier to see ice falls, moraines, ice bridges and glacier streams.
Every turn on the Park Road brings a new wonder as you journey miles into this astounding wilderness preserve with your knowledgeable driver/guide. Watch for ptarmigan, Alaska's state bird, in the open valleys. See golden eagles patrolling the higher elevations and ridge tops. And listen to ravens, magpies and gray jays chattering in the brush. With any luck, you'll see grizzlies crossing braided streams, Dall sheep traversing rugged cliffs and moose foraging in upland meadows. And this unfolding adventure leads to the lofty, isolated grandeur of Mt. McKinley itself - a wonder to behold.
As Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Glacier Bay National Park; protects a unique ecosystem of plants and animals living in concert with an ever-changing glacial landscape. How does it feel when a monumental chunk of ice splits off a glacier and crashes into the sea? The sound is like thunder. The impact shoots water hundreds of feet into the air. You hold your breath as you catch the moment on film. Then you wait for it all to happen again. And it does. Glacier Bay has more actively calving tidewater glaciers than anyplace else in the world.
The View from the Spit
One school of thought is that 15,000 years ago, a Kachemak Bay glacier conveniently pushed a five-mile long gravel bar toward Cook Inlet, leaving a huge sand bar behind when it retreated. Either that, or the sand bar was created by tidal swells. At any rate, The Spit, as it's called, is today the salient geographic feature of the city of Homer. It's also a good place to walk the beach, take in the view, or bend an elbow. Homer is a busy port located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in the shadow of the Kenai Mountains. It's world famous for its halibut fishing, and gives you great opportunities to kayak, spot bears, and peruse the local galleries.

A Titan on the Move
Come face to face with a gigantic wall of ice that fills your view and extends for miles in either direction. Hubbard Glacier is a titan on the move, advancing faster than almost any other glacier on the continent. When it begins to disgorge its ice, by this point 400 years old, into the salt water at Disenchantment Bay, this behemoth is five miles wide and 40 stories high. It dwarfs ships. As you glide along, watch for seals basking on ice floes, listen for the loud, deep rumble and wait for the mighty crack and thunderous crash.

Marvel at the austere beauty of this remote location on the Arctic Ocean - the source of the oil fields that feed the TransAlaska pipeline. Located on Alaska's North Slope and the Arctic Ocean, Prudhoe Bay is 1,300 miles south of the North Pole and 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Sightsee along the Dalton Highway, the fabled Haul Road, crossing the ancient Brooks Range mountains into caribou country.
Northward Toward the Fjords
The mountains are so close to the city limits you'd think they were trying to nudge Seward into Resurrection Bay. Located along the southern coast of the Kenai Peninsula, the city is vital fishing port, a major stop for railway passengers heading north, and the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park and its steep-sided, glacier-carved valleys and flourishing wildlife. The park is also home to the Harding Ice Field, the largest entirely within U.S. borders. Watch for bald eagles, listen to the sounds of thousands of seabirds and share the waters with Stellar sea lions, harbor seals, Dall's porpoises, sea otters and whales.
